CBA’s 60th-anniversary show’s training workshops Print Email

With CBA's 60th-anniversary convention one day shorter than the usual show, there will be a full schedule of training for retailers attending the July 12-15 event in Denver.

Educational offerings at the International Christian Retail Show will include CBA's Professional Christian Retailer (PCR) certification courses, a Prospective Retailer Seminar and workshops, including some tailored to church-based stores.

Christian publishing leaders believe that declining religious book sales can be held off by tailoring content to the audience with print-on-demand titles and emerging digital technologies, according to a report by Book Business magazine.

In a May 1 article of the publication with the headline "Saving Religious Books," industry leaders cited problems that have contributed to the sales slowdown for religious books and Christian bookstores, including a changing retail landscape, the recession, decreased donations for ministry accounts that order in bulk and even the popularity of blockbuster books.

Expolit conference ‘exceeds expectations’ Print Email

Despite the economic downturn, reduced floor space and lagging registrations, sales at the 17th annual Expolit conference--which wrapped up earlier this week in Miami--were on the rise, organizers said.

The largest trade fair in the U.S. for the Spanish-language Christian literature and music world drew nearly 5,000 people a day to view the exhibits and attend the nightly concerts, featuring many of the leading Christian Latino musicians. Held May 14-19 at the Doubletree Miami Mart/Airport Hotel and Exhibition Center, Expolit attracted hundreds of booksellers, publishers, distributors and music label representatives along with thousands of members of the general public.

Tyndale signs Beth Moore to book deal Print Email

Tyndale House Publishers has signed speaker and author Beth Moore to a book deal, which will be released in spring 2010.

"Her love for the Word of God and her ability to make biblical material relevant to the everyday lives of ordinary women are qualities that permeate her writing, as well as her speaking ministry, and it is a privilege to publish her book," said Rebekah Nesbitt, associate publisher of non-fiction books for Tyndale House.

Christian publishing veteran Byron Williamson has launched a new multimedia company, which will produce a video series based on the New York Times best-seller 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper with Cecil Murphey (Revell/Baker Publishing Group).

Williamson will serve as president and CEO of Worthy Media Inc., which will acquire strategic Christian content, marketing and distribution companies. "Our mission is to ‘help people experience the heart of God,' " said Williamson, former president of Word Publishing, Thomas Nelson/Word Publishers and Integrity Publishers. "Whether print, video, film, music, TV or the Web, Worthy's goal is to deliver a Christian message across multiple formats and platforms."

Moe Girkins among top women in publishing Print Email

Zondervan chief Maureen "Moe" Girkins has been named one of the "50 Top Women in Book Publishing" by Book Business magazine.

Having joined the leading Christian publisher from outside the industry in 2008--with executive positions in the technology world--Girkins makes the list for overseeing all of Zondervan's business operations and working with parent company HarperCollins "on strategic planning and cooperative operations initiatives."
