The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) is going back to the old ways for its annual book awards next year.

The association's Christian Book Awards will be presented at a special dinner event in Nashville, May 3, on the eve of the group's Executive Leadership Summit (ELS).

Holiday shoppers seeking big discounts Print Email

Contrary to some forecasts of an improved holiday shopping season in 2009, a new survey released today by America's Research Group (ARG) and UBS Global Equity Research reveals that sales are weaker this year than in 2008.

"The shopping season is a repeat of last year," said Britt Beemer, CEO and founder of ARG, known for his Christian retail channel studies. "More shoppers are waiting for better deals, and stores just aren't giving them big enough discounts."

Thomas Nelson scraps Open House Print Email

Thomas Nelson has again called off its Open House event for Christian retailers.

The publisher's second such program for leading accounts was originally to have been hosted in Nashville in April this year, when it was pushed back to an undetermined date in 2010. But now the company has announced that it will not take place next year, either.

Christian Retailing Update incorrectly reported in its Nov. 23 issue that Stan Guthrie--rather than Stan Gundry--was recently named editor in chief of all Zondervan products. Guthrie is an editor at large for Christianity Today magazine, while Gundry has been promoted at Zondervan.

Christian retailers are invited to visit the Virtual Christmas Showcase for special discounts on products from more than 20 vendors.

The showcase is an online exhibition and training event hosted by Christian Retailing magazine and focused on the holiday season. In addition to highlighting products and specials, the online event also includes interviews, new release spotlights and other offers. The virtual show has drawn more than 3,000 visits from 66 countries since it began Sept. 30, with nearly 9,000 page views.

Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian--which received positive reviews from Christian movie Web sites--was released this week by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and is being distributed to Christian retail by Word Distribution.

Released Dec. 1, the comedy hit sequel to Night at the Museum starring Ben Stiller, Amy Adams and Robin Williams generated $177 million in 4,101 theaters nationwide since its May 22 release, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Casting Crowns' 'World' sets sales record Print Email

GRAMMY Award-winning group Casting Crowns has set a sales record for the highest debut in Christian music in SoundScan's history with Until the While World Hears (Beach Street Records/Provident-Integrity Distribution).

Released Nov. 17, the band's fourth studio album sold more than 167,000 copies its first week, making it No. 1 on the Nielsen SoundScan Current Contemporary Christian album chart and No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
