The continuing free giveaway of a special-edition Charles Darwin's evolution manifesto The Origin of Species--which features a 50-page introduction refuting Darwin's theory--continues to rankle atheists.

Bridge-Logos Foundation partnered with evangelist, author and speaker Ray Comfort's Living Waters ministry to supply some of the books--which retail for $4.99--to Christian bookstores for evangelistic purposes. The book application for Zonderkidz's The Berenstain Bears and the Golden Rule is currently the No. 1 iPhone app, as well as the top-selling app in the books category of Apple's iPhone store, company officials said.

There are currently 40,000 apps in the books category of Apple's iPhone store and 6,000 apps in the same category of Apple's iPad store.

The Berenstain Bears and the Golden Rule, created by Stan and Jan Berenstain with Mike Berenstain, is a 2009 iParenting Media Awards Outstanding Product in the book category. Published by Zondervan's children's division, the book is a Berenstain Bears "Living Lights" title, the first four of which have sold nearly 500,000 copies in total.

"The book apps have successfully brought the words and lessons of these books to life like no other format," said Annette Bourland, senior vice president and publisher with Zonderkidz. "We are delighted and encouraged by the success of our book apps, and we expect them to play a significant role in our publishing plans moving forward."

The book apps, created by Oceanhouse Media, combine the Berenstains' original text and artwork with features that entertain and promote reading in young children.

Besides The Berenstain Bears and the Golden Rule, the other apps are derived from the books The Berenstain Bears Say Their Prayers and The Berenstain Bears Go to Sunday School--available for download for $2.99 each.
