'Missional fiction' features diverse themes Print Email

While "bonnet books" continue to dominate Christian fiction, interest is piquing in other areas. The typically clean, safe themes found in Amish romance novels contest another evolving trend in inspirational novels-fiction with a mission.

While an exact term for the emerging genre has yet to be coined, some authors and publishers refer to it as "missions fiction" or "missional fiction." Its themes are diverse, but it includes a great story with a strong side of realism.

In-store e-book platform announcement imminent Print Email

Details of an industry-wide platform to help brick-and-mortar Christian retail stores secure some of the growing e-book market could be announced soon.

CBA Executive Director Curtis Riskey told Christian Retailing that the e-book wish-list solution drawn up following discussions with retailing and publishing leaders had been shopped to possible providers with hopes that the successful candidate might be announced this month.

Christian products industry 'in uncharted waters' Print Email

The new chairman of CBA has called for a new level of cooperation and partnership in the Christian products industry.

"Never before has it been so critical that we work together," said George Thomsen, as he assumed the key role Oct. 1 at the retailers' organization. "In many ways we are navigating in uncharted waters. It will require the collaborative efforts of our industry's best minds and the Lord's wisdom if we are to succeed in the future."

Big Idea is releasing VeggieTales: It's A Meaningful Life in Christian retail stores Saturday, Oct. 2, three days ahead of the general market.

The latest VeggieTales parody parable re-imagines the Jimmy Stewart classic It's a Wonderful Life, with Larry the Cucumber wondering what might have happened if injury had not prevented him from playing in the big Salad Bowl football game.

Marketsquare Europe kicks off Print Email

Christian Trade Association International's (CTAI) Marketsquare Europe 2010 will feature 50 eastern European publishers this weekend. Set for tomorrow and Saturday, Oct. 1-2 in Oradea, Romania, the event will be held just prior to the Frankfurt International Book Fair for the convenience of American and other publishers who will be in Europe at the time.

"We want to make it cost-effective for rights managers to reach eastern European publishers," said Kim Pettit, CTAI's chief operating officer. "The exhibition fee, lodging, food and transportation costs should mean that for just about $1,500, a company can multiply its impact in this region."

Store rejected over 'offensive' Christian name Print Email

A long-established Christian bookstore has been rejected by an advertising agency because of its "offensive" name.

Don Toy, owner of Christian Book and Gift Shop in Kittanning, Pa.--a fixture in the town for more than 60 years--was told his store could not advertise on a local restaurant's menu because of the name "Christian."

'Dandelion Dust' adds more theaters Print Email

After a slow start for its debut last week, Like Dandelion Dust--based on the 2006 Center Street novel by New York Times best-selling author Karen Kingsbury--hopes to pick up steam this weekend by more than doubling the number of its theaters.

Starring Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino, Golden Globe nominee Barry Pepper and introducing child actor Maxwell Perry Cotton, Like Dandelion Dust (LDD) centers on the battle between adoptive and birth parents over a 6-year-old boy.
