Organization’s layoffs forced by ‘twin economic challenges’ of financial downturn, founder James Dobson’s departure

 

In the latest round of cuts, Focus on the Family has laid off 110 workers, reducing its staff to 750—and by nearly half from eight years ago.

Announcing a $27 million reduction in its budget earlier in August, the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based organization said that the move was “necessitated by twin economic challenges.”

Amish Grace--the highest-rated film in Lifetime Movie Network history--is being released Sept. 14 on DVD by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and distributed to Christian retail by Word Distribution.

Kerusso has been named the official apparel partner for Like Dandelion Dust, a new movie based on the Center Street novel by New York Times best-selling author Karen Kingsbury.

Winner of more than 30 film festival awards--including a dozen Audience Choice Awards for Best Picture, and recipient of the Heartland Truly Moving Picture Award--the movie may be "the next Blind Side," according to USA Weekend.

Publishers 'sensitive' to patriotic titles Print Email

Though sales of patriotic products for Veterans Day are likely to lag behind the Fourth of July season, an increasing number of imprints and focus on the genre show this niche market is growing.

"We think Christian publishers should be focusing on this," said John Fallahee, sales and marketing director for AMG Publishers, which formed its God & Country Press imprint in 2006. "We've got to cross over and bring the gospel to the nation. Publishing is still a great vehicle for that."

Munce Group's Christian Product Expo (CPE) kicks off this weekend, with the event featuring the premiere of the next release from the creators of the best-selling Facing the Giants and Fireproof.

CPE Nashville 2010 is to be held Sept. 12-14 at the Embassy Suites Murfreesboro Hotel & Conference Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Fiction nearly rivals Bible purchases Print Email

Christians bought nearly as many fiction titles as Bibles last year, according to a new report from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) that takes an in-depth look at the Christian book consumer in the U.S.

Released for the second year, the 2009 ECPA Consumer Demographics & Buying Behaviors Report offers the purchasing patterns and behavior of Christian book shoppers as well as the book-buying habits of consumers grouped into one of five Christian segments--Active, Professing, Liturgical Christians, Private and Cultural Christians--based on spiritual interests and behaviors.
