altThe dramatization of an unlikely South African evangelist's remarkable ministry, which became a hit general release movie in his homeland, arrives on DVD next month.

Available tomorrow, April 7, Faith Like Potatoes tells the story of farmer Angus Buchan--described by South African media as "a folksy version of Billy Graham"--who overcame major losses to see a physical and spiritual harvest, spreading a message of racial reconciliation and hope in Christ.

altRock band Downhere recently won the Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year for Ending Is Beginning (Centricity Records/Word Distribution) during the Juno Awards, Canada's equivalent to the GRAMMY Awards.

Recognized with the group's third Juno Award during the event, held March 28 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Downhere was chosen over Article One, Life Support, Newworldson and Starfield.

altWhile the Bible remains the cornerstone of Christian bookstores, it is available in an almost dizzying array of options-requiring retailers to be at the top of their game managing the category.

Many stores carry between 800 to 1,000 varieties in stock, while in 2007, Christian stores' sales covered 7,000-plus SKUs, according to the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA).

Christian music industry addresses its challenges Print Email

altOrganizers of this year's GMA Gospel Music Week--the annual celebration of Christian music that runs April 18-22 in Nashville and culminates with the 40th Annual Dove Awards--believe that the theme "engage" is appropriate.

"We feel like with the economic crisis, people are more apt to stay home and run for cover, but that's even more of a time to not disengage," said Gabriel Aviles, vice president of marketing, business and development for the Gospel Music Association (GMA). "We need each other, and we're an ecosystem that's always worked together well. Going home and shutting your door is not the best solution."

altBig Idea Inc. has changed hands again. Boomerang Media LLC and GTCR--one of the leading private equity firms in the country--recently announced the acquisition of the principal U.K. and U.S. subsidiaries of Entertainment Rights, including Big Idea and Classic Media Inc.

U.K.-based Entertainment Rights purchased U.S.-based Classic Media in 2007, which bought Big Idea after the company filed for bankruptcy in 2003.

CBA chairman tells of ‘new business model’ Print Email

altSpeaking further about his plans, CBA chairman Jim Whitaker--co-owner of New Life Christian Store in Lynchburg, Va.--said he will close his brick-and-mortar shop after 20 years, but he intends to stay in business.

"We are not shutting down; what we are doing is closing our present location and transitioning to a new business model," he told Christian Retailing. "We will continue to serve our church/institutional accounts and others by face-to-face direct sales, Web site, e-mail and phone orders. We are also investigating other innovative avenues of marketing Christian retail product."
